Soroptimist International

The first Soroptimist club was formed in 1921 in Oakland, California, by a group of business and professional women who were interested in volunteer service. The name Soroptimist – a coined term interpreted as “best for women” was chosen to define the service organization. In 1928, the individual Soroptimist clubs in North America banded together to create a federation of Soroptimist clubs, now called Soroptimist International of the Americas. Approximately 95,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries contribute time and financial support to community-based and international projects that benefit women and girls. For more information on our global organization, go to Soroptimist International of the Americas.

Soroptimist International of Williamsburg

Soroptimist International of Williamsburg was established in 1948 by 20 local women. The members of Soroptimist join for the single purpose to help improve the lives of other women and girls, but they also enjoy the friendship and support of other members.

Soroptimist believes the most effective way to empower women and girls is by providing them with access to education. Educated women and girls are far more likely to realize their potential.

S.I. Williamsburg members are employed in all areas of business. Some are small business owners or teachers or leaders in the community, and some members are retired business professionals.

Monthly dinner meetings are held which feature speakers of interest along with conducting business of the club.

If you are interested in helping to improve the lives of women and girls in the Greater Williamsburg area, and would like additional information, attend a dinner meeting at the Williamsburg Lodge, and/or join S.I. Williamsburg, please go to our “Contact” page.
